Chelsie Guillemet in the Dominican

Song is a natural expression and a kindred spirit in my life. Engaging and reflecting upon creativity heightens my awareness of life so I can feel its quality. Keeping it honest and organic, both in and outside the lines, is essential to me; you could say it’s the motif of my being. Thus, I don’t write or produce by any pre-ordained formula where marketing influences content. I want you to hear/feel my song, not the magic of ProTools.

I call myself a Californian, even though I’m mostly Nashvillian…Sacramento served as both my birthplace and that of my songwriting. At seven, I wrote my first little number…in my grandparents’ swimming pool. Pretty appropriate.

To my childhood, I give one word: Hermitage. This little community on the outskirts of Nashville provided me ample opportunities to learn and enjoy life. Our house was without TV until I was past the age of immediate impressionability, so my earliest inspirations were nature, books, and music.

As I grew I became very observant of the feelings in my world, and very analytical. High school drove me to pen and paper, and I accumulated notebooks of verbose poetry and melancholy lyrics to the same dark chords. My perspectives became increasingly jaded, clouded by the seemingly endless facade of private high school, then college, and the music industry itself.

However, our destinies are what we truly feel, and the desire to write led me to discover what people enjoy and relate to in music. What I need to hear to keep my head on straight in life isn’t so different from what we all want to hear, and that’s creative expression in tune with the greater harmony of life and love. The revelation is unending!

In January ‘09, I began publishing (Music by Motif, BMI) my own songs, while acquiring the skills to produce and record. I blog, tweet, Facebook, play out, and otherwise share however I can, but at the end of the day, I just want to write enjoyable music that gains an ear every time its played. So, share what you hear, if you feel compelled, and thanks for listening to Motif Music!
